The Benson High School Agricultural Education Program- The Agricultural FFA program here at Benson is for students wishing to pursue a career in the Agricultural field. Our FFA chapter competes in FFA CDE events all over the state, from Livestock Judging's to Public Speaking contests. We also attend many state wide and National FFA conferences, at which we have won numerous,  and very prestigious awards. Our Agricultural program is very active and  we hope to recruit more motivated students for the 2014- 2015 school year. Learning to Do, Doing to Earn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve. 

The Agriculture - Animal Systems Course Sequence is as follows:       
  • Introduction to Agriculture (9th - 10th Grade)
  • Applied Biological Systems (10th - 11th Grade)
  • Agricultural Science 1 (11th - 12th Grade)
  • Agricultural Science 2 (11th - 12th Grade)

Introduction to Agriculture
 
Requirements:  9th –10th Grade

The Introduction to Agriculture course is required of all students who enter the Agriculture Education Program. This is a first-year course which is designed to prepare the student for the successive agriculture education course offered for the second, third and fourth years of the program. Emphasis is placed on the basic principles of animal science, plant science, leadership development, agricultural business management and occupational planning. The student must keep a notebook, accurate record books, participate in planning their own Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), complete an Agricultural Proficiency Award, participate in Career Development Events (CDE) and lastly, participate in the Benson FFA Chapter as a whole. 
   
Applied Biological Systems
Requirements:  10th –11th Grade 
Year-Long Course:1 Credit 
Course Prerequisite:Intro to Ag. (C or Better) 
Degree of Difficulty:Average 

A student must have completed Introduction to Agriculture successfully in order to enroll in Applied Biological Systems. Emphasis is placed on basic competencies needed in the areas of plant sciences, animal sciences, leadership development, agricultural business management and agricultural mechanics. Students will be required to keep  a notebook, accurate record books, participate in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE)  which they would have prepared the following year, complete an Agricultural Proficiency Award, participate in Career Development Events (CDE)  and lastly, participate in the  Benson FFA Chapter as a whole. 

Agriculture Science 1
Requirements:  11th –12th Grade 
Year-Long Course: 1 Credit 
Course Prerequisite:Applied Biological Systems (C or Better) 
Degree of Difficulty: Average 

This course will begin where Applied Biological Systems culminated. Emphasis in this course will be placed on plant sciences, animal sciences, agricultural business management, horticultural science and leadership development. Students will keep a notebook, record book, and participate in a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) and FFA.
 
Agriculture Science 2 (Cochise College Dual Credit Option – AGR 102) 
Requirements:11th –12th Grade 
Year-Long Course:1 Credit 
Course Prerequisite:

Intro to Agriculture, Applied Bio Systems, and Ag. Science 1 (C or Better) 
Degree of Difficulty:  Average 

This course will emphasize the same general areas as Agriculture Science I. Units of instruction will be alternated each year for this course. Students will keep a notebook and participate in a supervised agricultural experience program (SAE). This is a continuation of the prerequisite classes already taken.

Construction Technologies

These students will design and draw their own plans, create a materials list and build the plan on their own or in a small group. Projects will include small to medium sized structures that include framing, roofing, siding, insulation, and finish work. Students will work extensively with both hand tools and power tools. This class may meet off-site during production of structures.

Construction Technology 2 (Cochise College Duel Credit Option - BCT 102)
Requirements:11th –12th Grade 
Year-Long Course: 
1 Credits BHS - 3 Credits Cochise College 
Course Prerequisite:Construction Tech 1 
Degree of Difficulty:  High 

These students will design and draw their own plans, create a materials list and build the plan in a small group or as a class project. Projects will include medium to full sized structures that include all phases of residential construction including: framing, roofing, siding, insulation, plumbing, electrical, concrete, masonry, and finish work. Students will work extensively with hand tools, power tools and construction tools. This class may meet off-site during production.

This course covers the latest in kitchen tools and appliances, cooking terms, kitchen management, consumer decisions, nutrition, meal planning, etiquette, kitchen safety and basic food preparation techniques. Students will apply this knowledge to meal preparation and service for family situations and special occasions. This course will also help students become familiar with various food-related careers.                           


Principles of Culinary Arts (Cochise College Dual Credit Option - CUL 107)

Requirements: 10th –11th Grade

The student will cover an introduction to the hospitality industry, which includes hotel-restaurant-resort careers. A student completing this program will possess the technical knowledge and skills required for planning, selecting, storing, purchasing, preparing and serving quality food products using commercial equipment. Emphasis is placed on leadership skills, employability skills, and management of food establishments. Students will cater community luncheons and events on a regular basis. These practical applications will take place during the regular lunch period and requires students to complete all phases of the catering component.

The Benson High School Graphic Design Program is for students wanting to pursue a college business degree or start their own business in the future. This program has produced several Arizona FBLA State Champions along with four FBLA National Conference top ten teams.

The Graphic Design Program Course Sequence is as follows:

Introduction to Design/Art

Introduction to Design/Art involves the practice of effective communication skills in the visual arts, problem solving and decision making, as well as safe working procedures in the visual arts room. Legal and ethical behavior will be utilized as well as basic computer concepts, operations, and application. Students will learn to draw and illustrate, create computer graphics and work with a variety of mediums. 2D artworks as well as 3D artworks will be created.

 

Graphic Design 1

Requirements:                  10th –11th Grade

Course Prerequisite:      Introduction to Design/Art

Graphic Design 1 involves continuation of the lessons of beginning art and furthers those concepts. Employability skills participation in Skills USA and oral communication are added to the students’ lessons. Students in Graphic Communications will continue on a path of visual arts centered on Photoshop and InDesign. These students’ work will be begun as drawings and illustrations and then progress into the technical areas of CS3 and CS4.

 

Graphic Design 2

Requirements:                  11th –12th Grade            

Year-Long Course:           1 Credit

Course Prerequisite:      Graphic Design 1             

Degree of Difficulty:       Very High           

Graphic Design 2 will involve completion of InDesign and Photoshop assignments geared towards implementation of graphics communication work in chosen fields. Students will be expected to demonstrate job search skills, financial records for a graphic communication office and exploration of the theory and practice of graphic communications. Students will be expected to create Digital Media Products and develop an individual career path for the graphic communication organization. Culmination will be the preparation of students towards employment in the graphics communication workplace, either as a freelance artist, employee in the field, or an entrepreneur.

An introduction to health careers including basic information such as ethics, professional conduct, infection control, safety, communication and job skills. Course Prerequisite:

This course is designed to prepare prospective medical field students to successfully complete the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) State Certification. College credit is given for this course in cooperation with Cochise College and Cochise County Tech Prep. Cochise County Tech Prep currently provides one-half the tuition rate while the student is responsible for the remaining one-half cost. Students are required to participate in clinical sessions that will be scheduled outside of the regular school day. Arrangements must be made to participate in the required sessions. Students taking this course must be enrolled for reverse-credit course with Cochise College.

Course Prerequisite:      Intro to Agriculture or Construction Core

This course will cover the theory and application of major welding processes to include parameters, advantages and limitations, applications, equipment, health and safety, introductory welding metallurgy, welding design and inspection and practical application. The course will include aspects of oxyacetylene, arc welding and MIG welding. Emphasis will be placed on flat position welding.  

           

Welding 2 (Cochise College Dual Credit Option - AGR 250)

Requirements:  11th –12th Grade
